The recently passed state budget notwithstanding, the San Jose Unified School District board of trustees has unanimously agreed that the instructional calendar for the 2011-2012 school year will be 180 days.
The commitment to a full school year without furloughs was based on the governor’s May revised budget, federal funding the district received and money saved from trimming the adult education program and district reserves.
“San Jose Unified’s board of education was extremely pleased to approve the instructional calendar for 2011-12, returning the instructional days for students to 180,” said board president Rich Garcia in a release. “Our superintendent and staff have worked hard to make sure our budgets are tied closely to the classroom and support high-quality education for all students.
“It would be our utmost desire to be able to extend the day for students, providing them even more learning tools and skills for the 21st century.”
Superintendent Vincent Matthews said the district appreciates the community input as well as the emails sent regarding scheduling of furlough days.
“We know your first desire, as well as ours, was to have no furlough days, and we are pleased to be able to bring back a full 180-day calendar of instruction for the students in San Jose Unified,” Matthews said.
