SANTA CLARA
Police still haven’t
ID’d shooting victim
Authorities late Sunday still had not released the name of the man armed with a knife who was shot and killed Saturday morning by Santa Clara police.
The bizarre scene unfolded about 4 a.m. when an argument erupted at a house party on Crystal Drive. Police said the man who was killed had stabbed a man at the party before breaking into a house next door.
But when a friend of the shooting victim tried to calm him down, the friend was stabbed in the chest. Officers sent in a police dog, but the shooting victim stabbed the dog, nearly slicing its ear off and puncturing the dog’s torso and back of the neck. The dog is expected to recover.
As of late Sunday, police had not yet explained why officers shot the man, nor had they released the names of the officers involved. They were immediately placed on administrative leave, which is routine after such a shooting.

SUNNYVALE
Santa Clara man may
have died before crash
The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office on Sunday identified the man who died after crashing his Chevrolet Suburban on Lawrence Expressway on Friday as he apparently suffered a medical emergency.
Ernesto Ancona, 48, of Santa Clara, died on the road after his sport-utility vehicle suddenly veered across the median into the northbound lanes, said CHP officer Todd Thibodeau.
Ancona was approaching Arques Avenue, heading south on Lawrence Expressway, when his vehicle slid over a divider that separated a business complex and the expressway. It struck a sign and came to a halt in bushes, the CHP said.
Authorities have yet to conclusively determine whether Ancona died of his medical condition, possibly a heart attack, or the crash. But a preliminary investigation indicates Ancona did not die because of the collision, Thibodeau said.

BELMONT
City council member
seeks to ban bottles
Following the lead of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Belmont City Councilman Bill Dickenson wants to get rid of plastic water bottles at City Hall.
The bottles, which the city distributes at meetings and events and makes available to all its employees, would be replaced with water pitchers and drinking fountains. The aim is to spare the environment and save some money for the city.
“I’ve been born and raised knowing we’ve got the best water supply in the nation coming out of Hetch Hetchy” reservoir in the Sierra Nevada, Dickenson said.
