John Clauss UlrichJohn Ulrich, Active in San Jose Community, Dies at 58
Resident of Rancho Santa Teresa Neighborhood since 1968

John Clauss Ulrich, age 58, passed away November 18, 1999. A native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, where he was born October 15, 1941, Mr. Ulrich graduated from Shaker Heights High School where he was in the Electronics Club and a member of the marching band.

After high school, he attended Ohio State University for one year before moving to Southern California and graduating from the IEEE Institute with an Electronics Degree.

Through the years Mr. Ulrich also attended San Jose City College, San Jose State University, University of California Berkeley.

Pride in Work
In 1962, Mr. Ulrich worked for Jet Propulsion Labs in Southern California where he was very proud to be a part of several of the early space program's endeavors. Involved in the creation of Voyager, he was fascinated when Voyager finally made it to its final destination.

In 1964, Mr. Ulrich adopted San Jose as his permanent home where he worked on the research and development of the first floppy disk and hard drive at IBM.

In 1972, he ventured into the field of real estate and in 1975 he started his own real estate consulting firm. Mr. Ulrich is listed in 1983 edition of Who's Who in Real Estate. Diagnosed with Alzheimer Disease in January of 1992, Mr. Ulrich closed his Real Estate practice that same year.

Active in Community
Mr. Ulrich served on the San Jose Planning Commission from 1974 until 1980 where he played a role in the inception of highway 85. John Ulrich was also very instrumental in keeping the land open for an Industrial Reserve in the South San Jose - Santa Teresa Area. It took a long time to see any development, however the Industrial Area is now booming with activity.

He also served on the League of California Cities Transportation Committee, City of San Jose Parking Advisory Committee, California Attorney General Task force on Environmental Quality, and the Improvement Committee of San Jose.

He won the Outstanding Service Award from the President's Citizens Community for his service from 1973 to 1974 and in 1972, he was nominated for the San Jose Jaycees San Jose Young-Man of the Year

John was also very involved in his community as an Elder at Christ United Presbyterian Church. Additionally, he worked with the church and city to facilitate the construction of the Handicapped Housing that is now there.

Family
Mr. Ulrich and his family were also active members in the Northern California Starcraft Camping Club from 1973 thru to 1976. In their early years with this club, Mr. Ulrich and his wife were actively involved as officers and wagon masters.

Preceded in death by his brother, Dan Ulrich of Phoenix, Ariziona, Mr. Ulrich is survived by wife Magdaline Ulrich, daughters Teresa Ulrich and Dulcey Branch, and step-mother Marion Adams Ulrich of Hudson, Ohio.

Mr. Ulrich's deceased parents were Attorney Myron W. (Doc) and Beatrice J. Handy-Ulrich of Shaker Heights, Ohio.
