President's Message

The election results are in. I wish to thank all the candidates for running. For those who did not get on the Board, you should be proud that you put forth the effort for your community. Ty Chew, John Sheffield and Mecca Conaulty received the most votes and will serve for two years. Josephine Livingstone was elected for one year. Congratulations to the newly elected Board members.

While we were waiting for the votes to be counted, we had members making suggestion and comments and asking questions. One suggestion was that the financial statements be mailed to all the members once or twice a year. The newsletter should report more of the minutes of the Boards meetings. Cash flow items should be more available. These are all good ideas and the next Board will take them under advisement.

The Board asked for help from the members present to develop this information in the newsletter. Mark? and Becky? Volunteered to help with the newsletter.

I received Barbara McRoberts resignation on Friday. Her last day will be Friday October 8th. She has accepted a position with Bank of the West. Barbara has done an outstanding job helping the Board. We have lost an exceptional, responsible employee. She will be missed.

A big thank you goes out to all the members who helped on the Election Committee. It is a very important task and was done very well.

The Club is closed for another season. The adult pool, Jacuzzi and tennis courts are open for your use year round.

It has been my pleasure to serve as your President for the last two years. I will help the new Board in any way I can. I wish to thank all the Board members and the staff who are responsible for the success of our Club.

SPECIAL CLUB FINANCIAL STATEMENT

Dear Rancho Santa Teresa Swim and racquet Club home Owners,

This statement is written to counter some misconceptions that have resulted from a flyer circulating in the Club area. There is NO missing $200,000 from the Club accounts and there IS accountability for ALL moneys taken in and paid out of the Club's accounts. A Cash Flow Statement is created and presented every month at the Club Board Meeting that details all the year-to-date income and expenses for the Club. This Cash Flow Statement has been published in the Club Bulletin from time to time and is always available to any member upon request. A Balance Sheet showing the Club's assets and liabilities as of the end of the fiscal year (12/31) is presented at the Club's Spring meetings. This document is also available to any Club member upon request. The Club records are reviewed on a monthly basis.

To imply that Club money is missing or unaccounted for is in error and implies that the Board members or employees might be involved in some kind of cover-up. The Club's records, other than Personnel Records and Individual Homeowners Account Records, are available for viewing by any Club member after making arrangements with the Club Board President. To insure the integrity of the databases, direct access can only be done by authorized persons. If you have any questions, bring them to the Club Board meetings and Board members will be happy to answer them. If your questions cannot be answered for you immediately, a search will be made to find the information.

Troop 227 Scouting News

Summer and vacations are over and we have completed our first month of school. The Troop is back in full force. In September we had our quarterly Court of Honor. This is a meeting where scouts receive the awards and recognition they earned through the summer. The September Court of Honor is the biggest of the year. We recognized rank advancement, gave out merit badges, were entertained by the Order of the Arrow Indian Dance Team and held our annual Dessert Auction.
In September we camped at Portola Redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains. In October we are going to Castle Rock for a backpacking campout. The troop will hike in three miles, spend the weekend and then hike out. The boys learn to carry only the necessities, since all they have is what they carry in their packs. The Troop has lightweight tents and stoves designed for such a camp out. This kind of outing is fun and a good experience for all.
Troop 227 meets at the club on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Our October theme is crime prevention. We encourage boys between the ages of 11 (10 1/22 if bridging from Cub Scouts) and 17 to visit during a meeting and see what we're all about. We have an exciting program which promises to be filled with fun and adventure, as well as learning life skills and good citizenship. Scouting is committed to provide a safe, wholesome environment for boys.

San Jose Recycling Program
Important Reasons For The 24 hour Setout Rule:

  1. It minimizes the amount of materials that can blow away onto your neighbor's property.
  2. If trimmings begin to scatter, collection becomes more difficult and can cause more residue to be left behind.
  3. Trimmings are less likely to get blown into storm drains, which need to be kept clean.
  4. Most residents prefer their neighborhood street to look clean and free of debris during the week.
  5. It ensures that street sweepers will not have to drive around yard trimmings.
City ordinance requires that residents set out recycles and garbage no earlier than 24 hours prior to collection, or a citation may be issued.

Calpine/Metcalf Power Plant Update

FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS,

This is the first installment of what we hope to be a regular feature of the Newsletter: the Calpine/Metcalf Power Plant Update. As many of you know, the San Jose City Council will be considering a proposal from the Calpine Corporation to rezone a 14 acre plot just east of Tulare Hill from "Campus Industrial" to "Public/Quasi Public" in order to accommodate a 600 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant. Two months ago, the Board of Directors voted to establish a committee to formally represent the Board at the various regulatory and city meetings and to gather information regarding the proposed plant siting. The RST Committee on the Calpine/Metcalf Siting has attended several of these meetings and reported to the Board those results as well as the results of our independent research on the effect of the siting on the community. Last month, the Board authorized a poll of the membership in order to gain direction on how the Board should proceed.

Although only about 160 of you voted on this important issue, the results were a clear mandate by a factor of greater than 12 to 1 to oppose this siting. Many of us feel that such a facility close to a residential community was ill-conceived and inappropriate, and would not serve our interests, either energy-wise or financially. In accordance with this poll, the RST Committee on the Calpine/Metcalf Siting will begin the effort to make our views known to our political leaders. In the next few weeks, we will implement our plan to educate and enlist other groups, both near and farther away, in our effort to convince the City Council not to alter the General Plan (zoning plan) for the Coyote Valley.

In this effort, we would like to enlist the services of any of you who feel you may have something to contribute. Please leave your name and telephone at the club office if you can help. If not, your attendance at the various meetings held on our community by the state regulatory organization (California Energy Commission), and the advisory committee meeting of Councilwoman Charlotte Powers is important in getting the message to these decision-makers. At the very least, please inform yourselves regarding this issue by visiting the Santa Teresa Public Library to review documentation, or if you have access to the web, visit www.southsanjose.com and www.energy.ca.gov/sitingcases/metcalf. Also pay attention to the various notices posted on the windows of our club office to get up to the minute information on future meetings. Thank you.
